Around 1.8 million people in Poland are blind or visually impaired. According to Statistics Poland (GUS), 163,500 people have an officially recognized disability due to visual impairments. Nearly 40% of them (4 in 10) have a severe disability status, and the majority are seniors aged 65 and over.
More than 70,000 children with autism or Asperger’s syndrome are currently enrolled in Polish schools, according to the Ministry of Education. This number continues to grow every year.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 2.2 billion people worldwide live with some form of vision impairment.
On 19 July 2019, Poland’s Act on Ensuring Accessibility for Persons with Special Needs came into force. The legislation applies to public sector entities and covers architectural, digital, and information & communication accessibility.
On 28 June 2025, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) became applicable. Its requirements also extend to private companies that provide products or services to consumers.
Lack of accessibility is no longer only a reputational risk. Today, it can also result in financial penalties, regulatory enforcement actions, and exclusion from public procurement processes.

What is NaviWay?
NaviWay is a Polish indoor navigation system developed in collaboration with blind and visually impaired people. It consists of passive visual markers (NaviWayStickers) and a free mobile application. The app detects the markers using the smartphone camera and guides users to their selected destination while taking their individual accessibility needs into account.
Who Can Benefit from NaviWay?
Blind and visually impaired people
Elderly people
People with physical and mental disabilities
Neurodifferent people (m.in. autism and asperger’s syndrome)
Anyone who falls into a large unknown space
How NaviWay works. Six steps.
Pre-visit Guide
The user launches the app and selects a location. They can listen to or read the venue description, check directions, review available entrances, and choose their preferred route.
Entering the Facility Area
The smartphone provides a voice notification that the user has entered a NaviWay-enabled area. The app does not need to be open and works in the background.
Finding the First Marker
The user points the phone forward. The app detects a passive marker from a long distance and at a wide viewing angle.
Selecting a Destination
The user selects the destination they want to reach in the app (store, office, room, or restroom). The system then starts guiding them.
Indoor Navigation
The app provides voice guidance and displays directions on the screen. Subsequent markers confirm the user’s position along the route. Users can choose a route that takes their individual preferences and accessibility needs into account.
Arriving at the Destination
The app notifies the user when they have reached their destination. The entire journey can be completed without having to ask anyone for directions.
Challenges in Public Space Accessibility
Challenges
Blind, visually impaired, and other people with accessibility needs often feel lost in unfamiliar environments.
There is a lack of solutions based on universal design principles that do not require separate navigation systems for different user groups.
Staff spend valuable time helping visitors find their way instead of focusing on their primary responsibilities.
Public institutions are required to comply with accessibility legislation.
Commercial facilities that provide services to consumers must comply with the European Accessibility Act (EAA) from 28 June 2025.
During emergency evacuations, time and clear guidance are critical, yet many facilities still lack effective wayfinding support.
The NaviWay Solution
One system designed for all groups requiring assistance with orientation and navigation.
Passive markers also function as an audio guide, requiring no batteries and no maintenance.
Point-to-point route planning and navigation through the mobile app.
Reduced burden on staff by minimizing routine wayfinding inquiries.
Direct support for meeting accessibility requirements under national accessibility regulations and the EAA.
A scalable system that grows with the facility — start with a single location and expand as needed.
Navigation and orientation support during emergency evacuations.
What makes NaviWay different from other solutions?
Passive Technology
NaviWay requires no batteries, Bluetooth beacons, power supply, or wiring. A marker is simply a sticker or plaque that is always available and always works.
Designed for Everyone
NaviWay supports blind and visually impaired people, seniors, people with physical or cognitive disabilities, and neurodivergent individuals. It is built on the principles of universal design..
Scalable from a Single Point to an Entire Facility
Whether you need to mark a single entrance or an entire building, NaviWay scales with your needs and can expand as your facility grows.
